I know that you will have lots of questions when you start out online, I did too.

That’ s normal and you should ask questions.

woman questions blogging

Questions you probably have about starting with blogging

Will blogging be easy? Heck No.

Will blogging be quick? Sorry, another No. Blogs can take 6-12 months before they start to see any growth.

Will you need to put in the time and work? YES. YES. YES. (That is how you know this method is real)

Before you think this is too much for you. Just know that like anything blogging takes time.

You have to learn

how to set up your blog,

how to create quality content,

how to get traffic.

Okay, so blogging is not so easy. You will need to learn many new skills.

But once you have, then you will be able to create a passive income, money that will come in whilst you push Ellie on the swing or change Alfie’ s dirty diaper.

First, off blogging takes time and effort.

There’ s no doubt that you will have to put in the time and work to make it successful.

Blogging is a long-term strategy, so if you want money tomorrow, I’ m afraid blogging will not be the answer for you.

How to Start Your Blog — Step by step guide

How Do Blogs Make Money

There are two popular ways in which you can make money with your blog.

Firstly by using ads — you get ad revenue doing this.

Secondly, by affiliate marketing — you get revenue from selling products doing this.

Most blogs make money using these two main ways.

By placing ads on the blog and getting ad revenue.

To place ads on your blog, you would need to sign up for an ad network.

Usually, you have to wait until you reach a set level of traffic on your website before you can do this.

The popular ad networks are Adthrive, Mediavine, Ezoic. (You have to have a certain amount of traffic before they will allow you to sign up, except for Ezoic, which is not technically an ad network, but you can earn money through ads with them).

They will pay you per page view. A page view happens when a person comes to your site and reads a page on your blog.

To get page views, it goes without saying that you will need to build your website.

After this, you will need to keep adding fresh content that people want to read.

The longer they stay on your blog the more you will earn from ad revenue.

To keep earning money, you want people to keep coming back to your site and reading your content.

When they do this the ad network will pay you some money for the ads that were shown on your blog.

Here’ s why it is worth investing your time with a blog.

A blog will allow you to create passive income.

At first, you may not make much money with your blog, as it is dependent on the number of page views on your website.

The more page views you get, the more money you get paid.

Therefore, the goal with blogging is to create lots of quality content, get lots of traffic and lots of page views.

There is a lot more to all of that.

You will need to learn how to blog the right way.

With the right course and teacher, any beginner will be able to get started with their blog.

Earning an income through your blog is called passive income.

Well, it’ s not totally passive.

As there are things that you will need to do to keep your website up to date and fresh.

But it is passive because the ads on your blog can be shown whilst you are reading Alfie a book or playing with Ellie.

That is why it is called passive.

You have already done the work and now the blog just keeps earning money.

Each time someone reads a blog post you wrote months ago, you earn money.

Still Not Sure How Blogs Make Money?

You can also add another income stream to your blog, through Affiliate Marketing.

I know that Affiliate Marketing sounds technical, so let me break it down for you.

Let’ s say you have used a product before, when you became a new mum.

Something like a pram, car seat, or cot.

Maybe you liked it and tell other mums when you meet them.

Your view will likely sway them to buy it, because they know that you have tried it and tested it already.

There might also be some products that you tried and did not like so much.

You also tell other mums about these. More than likely they won’ t want to buy them, because now they know the flaws with that product, they may decide not to buy the product.

Affiliate Marketing is the same.

You recommend products to your audience who might be wondering whether to buy them or not.

You would need to use an affiliate link. When you do this, if the person buys the product, then you will receive a commission.

An affiliate link is a special link that has a code that will tell the company who produces that product that you sent them that person. They can then assign the credit to you.

The great part of affiliate marketing is that the buyer does not pay any more for the product when you recommend it.

But you will still receive a commission for recommending it if they buy it.

A bit like an estate agent selling you a house will get a commission on the sale (but less shady).

There is more to Affiliate Marketing than just placing your link on your blog.

You will have to learn the correct way to tell your audience about the product in order to create the most income.

You will need to learn which Affiliate program to join.

The most well-known affiliate program is the Amazon Associates program.

Many affiliates are promoting Amazon products and earning an income from home.

There are a lot of elements that you will need to learn to make affiliate marketing work.

You would be best taking a course like Affiliate Marketing for bloggers

Those are the main ways that moms are earning an income with their blogs.

But there are some other ways that you can add to your blog income, as you become more experienced.

You can also make money on your blog with

  • Advertising and sponsorship

If you have enough traffic and maybe some ranking with your blog, there will be companies who will want to pay you to put ads on your website. Or they may ask you to write a blog post about their company. Like I said this is for when you are more established and is another way that your blog can earn money, that you should keep in mind.

  • Sell your product or services

If you have a creative side and have a skill in making something, you can learn how to sell this through your website.

Or as you become more skilled online, you can create your own digital products and courses. But if you are a new blogger this is a strategy for later down the line.

Free or Low-Cost Blogging Courses

Other places where you will find courses that have low-cost blogging courses are Skillshare, Hubspot Academy, Teachable, or Udemy.

If you were thinking of joining any of these teaching platforms and are the creative type, then I would recommend Skillshare as the first choice.

Skillshare

skillshare

Rating: 4/5

How does my rating work?

1 = Don’ t waste your time

2= Some value, but not really worth the price

3= Some valuable teaching, but there are better courses out there

4 = Well worth buying and giving a try

5= Recommend buying

Why did it get a 4/5 rating:

I like the variety of courses on offer but if you aren’ t focused on what you want you could get lost in the multitude of courses. You could find yourself following different teachers and methods. Picking a bit of information here and there and get lost along the way. Some of the course offerings were outdated so look for the newer fresher courses.

Summary: You can try for free for 7 days.

Cost of Skillshare:

£5.99/month (when billed annually)

£14 when paid on a monthly plan

Premium access allows you unlimited access to so many classes on a wide range of topics.

Pros: Fantastic for creatives as there are a wide range of how-to courses. Courses are short and you can learn something during short breaks. Each class has a class project that you are encouraged to work along with and complete, then share in the class community area. You can get feedback from others or the course creator. New courses are frequently being added. The price point is affordable. You can learn on a wide range of subjects

Cons: Some courses are outdated from when the platform first started and might not as relevant anymore. Some courses felt like they were thrown together when the platform was starting, some creators put together some sloppy work. (they did do a clean out and seem to have got rid of many of these courses now). You could easily get lost in the multitude of courses and find yourself stuck in perpetual training mode.

What is “Skillshare ”:

Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of classes in design, business, tech, and more. Anyone can join the millions of members in the community to learn cutting-edge skills, network with peers, and discover new opportunities.

Hubspot Academy

hub spot academy

I almost missed knowing about this when I got started.

Hubspot Academy has several great free courses to get you started.

I would start with the Content Marketing Course.

Whilst this won’ t help you set up your blog, it will teach you about content creation and writing your blog.

There is a module on Creating Quality Blog Content Your Audience loves to Read and Share

The videos are bite-sized so are perfect for those in-between moments when you can just catch up and learn something during baby’s nap time.

Pros:

Free of course. Each course is packed full of content. Has a wide range of courses suitable for those starting to more advanced marketers. You can get a badge of the courses you have completed to place on your website.

Cons:

The courses are quite business orientated and come at the content from an advertising marketing point of view. The courses come across as formal. They use some technical terms that beginners will need to research to fully understand the course.

Teachable

You will find an array of courses to learn from on Teachable, some long and some short.

They have different plans with monthly and annual options.

Basic $29 per month (billed annually)

Pro $99 per month (billed annually)

Linkedin Learning

Linkedin Learning Offers a one-month free trial which gives you access to its expert-led courses.

After this, it will cost you $39.99 per month billed monthly.

You can cancel at any time so it may be worth starting with to wet your feet and see if creating an income online is for you.

Pros

  • Has a wide range of training courses on a variety of topics.
  • New courses are always being added keeping fresh and up to date with recent and relevant information.

Cons

  • Monthly cost to keep access to the training

Whether you will make money or not, if you get started with a blog is totally dependent on you and your actions.

quote effectiveness is doing the things that get you closer to your goals

Final Thoughts on Blogging Courses

Whilst the Free and low-cost training places are great places to start with when starting a blog, especially when you are on a tight budget, you would be better off using one system that you can follow from start to end.

I have talked about some low-cost start a blog training, these will allow you to see if this is for you or not, without a huge outlay.

But if you are more serious and really want to take your blogging from start to finish to the next level then this course is one of the best blogging training.

Blogging is still by far, one of the best ways to create an income from home. Judging by the way the world is going, everything you can think of is going to be online. Heck, I have even been offered a physiotherapy session online by my GP (but that’ s for another time). Isn’ t it time you gave some time to you, find out How to Create a Life and Business You Love — gain control over your family life, whilst doing something more meaningful

Here’ s a training course that will show you how to get started with a blog, narrow down your niche and how to make money from it.
