Pinterest is one of the tools, I have been adding into my marketing strategy.

So far I have found that it has been responsible for exploding my traffic.

If you are a new blogger, you may be confused about which marketing platform to choose.

If you are still deciding, I would suggest that Pinterest is a great way to gain blog traffic.

15 Cool Tricks To Use Pinterest to Gain Blog Traffic When You Are Starting Out

increase blog traffic

You might be wondering whether to set up a Facebook Group.

Build up a You Tube following.

Or add an Instagram story.

These are all great methods to gain traffic, but they take time to gain traction.

These social media marketing methods can be slow to see any real difference.

My best tip I can offer, is not to try to implement all of those social media marketing methods all at once.

Just Choose One.

Get that marketing method going till you see some results.

To clarify, I mean get it going well, that is until you see some gain in traffic to your blog.

Understand that platform. Know how it works.

By doing this, you will find that it will work better for you.

Once you have your chosen marketing method under your belt, then go back to your next social media marketing strategy and then add that.

Social Media marketing can be time consuming.

Not to mention overwhelming.

Consequently, trying to implement several social media marketing methods all at the same time, will burn you out before you even get started.

How To Use Pinterest to Increase Blog Traffic When You Are Starting Out

The first question you need to ask yourself is

Where does your blog audience hang out?

Which platform are you most likely to find them?

Pinterest probably isn’ t right for everyone.

For example, if your target audience is twenty something males, maybe you won’ t find too many of them on Pinterest.

You would be right in thinking that Pinterest’ s main audience are female.

If females are your target audience, then you will probably find them hanging out on Pinterest.

Let us look at my site, The Digital Mum.

My target audience is female, more specifically mums who have started a family and want to earn an income from home.

Most likely, they are probably at the point of returning to work or been back to work after a maternity break and are wondering if there is another way.

They want to find new ways to add income to the family budget, whilst also being able to spend time at home having cuddles with their baby.

I want to reach moms and mummies looking at ways to work from home, Pinterest is the perfect marketing platform for this.

Where Does Your Audience Hang Out?

This simple trick will increase the number of people who will see your message.

Then go and market there.

Hopefully, this is on Pinterest, because I want to share my cool 15 Tricks with you

3 Create a Killer Bio Description

This is your chance to tell pinners what you can offer.

Show them how you can help them.

Your bio description is a great place to put in your keywords for your blog niche.

It’ s your chance to be really clear about your message.

For example, if you are talking about parenting.

Some keywords you might use in your bio are :-

 4 Interesting Pins

I learnt a lot about creating pins since getting started.

I have had to go back to the drawing board and have come a long way.

Believe me you cannot just throw up anything as a pin and expect it to work.

Your pins are the décor of your home.

You wouldn’ t just throw anything into your home?

Here’ s some simple tips to follow when creating pins:-

Your pins need to be tall pins.

Pins need to have good quality images.

Pins need to have interesting titles that will intrigue your audience.

Keep your pin messages positive — Pinterest is a feel good platform.

Your pins are your real estate and you want your audience to click and take a look. You want them to save your pin.

Spend a bit of time, creating interesting pins that get your message across.

Look at Simple Pin Media Portfolio  for examples of good pins

5 How many pins per blog post

For each blog post I create a minimum of 5 pins.

After this I keep changing up those pins to keep them fresh.

Pinterest has changed alot in 2021 and they are asking for fresh content.

This is not going to be easy for bloggers who have a multiple of other tasks to complete as well.

But don’ t despair because there are many ways to get round creating fresh pins.

Remember that Pinterest is a visual site.

They read the images on your pin.

To keep your pin content fresh, you need to change the image or text for it to be different.

Sometimes this can be a simple thing like changing out the image.

Making the image smaller.

Adding a border to the pin.

Changing the title or wording on the pin.

Just imagine what you could do with 5 different pins and how you can keep changing these up.

6 Add A Call to Action to Your Pin

Tell your audience clearly what you want them to do.

When your audience sees your pin, will they know what you want them to do?

Maybe it is to click to read a blog post you wrote on Blogging Mistakes

Or you have a how to guide you can share on how to build a blog.

Show them what action you want them to take.

7 Use Good Quality Images

That’ s why I love using Canva.

On the Canva pro section there is so many photos to choose from.

It makes creating your pins so so easy.

I was on the free version for so long and spent hours searching around for good quality images for my pins.

I wasted a whole lot of time.

Honestly if you can stretch to the pro version, I can honestly say it has been one of the factors that has helped me to create interesting pins that look good.

8 Make Your Fonts Large

Most people searching Pinterest are doing so on their mobile phones.

You want pinners to be able to see your message easily on their mobile phone.

This is going to be the main method that pinners will be using to pin.

Try to find a few fonts that you like

Try to use one serif font and one non serif —

I try different ones together but have my few firm favourites that I have been sticking to.

Play around with the different fonts some work with some pins and messages and others don’ t.

Here’ s a few I like using: –

Faustina Semi Bold

Arialle

Abril Fatface

Trochhi

Coming Soon

Kaushan Script

Bakerie Bold

9 Subtle Branding On Your Pin

Add your name or blog name to each pin.

This helps to keep your brand on your pin.

It stops your pins being used.

If the pin has your logo or url then it will be clear where the pin came from.

Now don’ t be all over the place with this.

Keep it subtle.

You can see, I put the url on the bottom of each pin.

It is best to keep this to the middle or to the left side of the pin.

10   Pin Consistently

Pinterest likes fresh content.

You will need to keep your boards fresh with new content.

At first you may not have enough content of your own and you will need to add content from other boards to keep up.

This is fine. I had to do this at first.

Sometimes I still fill out boards on some days with content from other boards.

Pinterest wants content to be shared so don’ t be worried about pinning other content to your boards.

But you want to pin consistently and have pins pinning daily.

You can pin manually on Pinterest.

This allows you to set out your pins for a 2 week period

But

The best way to do this is to use a scheduler like Tailwind.

Pin 3-5 pins a day and keep it as natural as possible, to build up your content.

Don’ t go crazy pinning and pinning!!   Pinterest is going to wonder what is going on there.

Creating Your Boards

11 Your Boards are the Bricks

Your boards let Pinterest know what your profile is all about.

Using targeted and specific keywords will ensure that Pinterest knows what your blog is about.

Look at what other pinners are using for ideas about what to name your board.

Take a look at Pinterest Trends for ideas.

If you are starting from fresh then start with 3 categories.

Then have 2/3 boards for each category.

Make sure that the categories are ones that you are going to regularly posting content about.

The categories will need to be relevant to the board.

For example

Category 1: Blogging Tips

You might then have

Blogging for beginners

Blogging for writers

Blogging for moms

Do all your keyword research and work out your board title based on the keyword research.

Then use the rest of the keywords into your descriptions on the boards.

Make it conversational and interesting afterall you want people to read them and click further.

Aim for 30 pins on each board before you start adding your own content.

Search for good content from other relevant boards and start pining this to your boards.

12 Make Your Board Relevant

When you name your boards make them relevant to your niche and your audience.

You want to niche down.

For a money and personal finance niche, you can have boards about

Budgeting tips

Money saving ideas

How to pay down debt

Each board needs to have a purpose.

Each board need to have a reason for being there.

Just like the brick holding up the house,

Ask yourself what is the job of that board?

Before you set your boards up, make sure that you have done some keyword research.

I know it seems rather tedious but you will thank me in the long run when everything is set up correctly. Why go back to correct mistakes I say.

The best place to start your research is on Pinterest (I know simple right)

Go to your main page by clicking on your logo in the right hand side and you will see the Pinterest search icon

search image on pinterest

You can see here I’ ve searched for “how to start a blog ”.

Pinterest then suggests some keywords and ideas.

You can search single words or keyword phrases to see what things people are searching for. It also suggests sites that may be of interest.

Can you see how this can turn your pinterest boards and website around.

Just imagine if you start to rank for those keywords and Pinterest suggests your site to people who are looking for what you are offering.

13 Add Descriptions to your Boards

Having a description tells Pinterest what your board is about.

Pinterest has also started suggesting your boards to others based on the description.

Make sure you fill in your description.

Make it clear and have the keywords that fit with your niche.

Use Clever Pinning Strategies

14   Pin to a Relevant Board First

For each new blog post, pin it to the board that is most relevant first. This tells Pinterest what that pin is about.

If your pin is about how to find your blog niche then add it to your Blogging Tips board first.

Then after about 7 days, pin it to your blog post board or to another relevant board.

15 Pin from your Blog

Remember Pinterest wants fresh content.

Whenever you or someone goes to your blog and pins from these, you send a new pin to Pinterest.

Instead of re-pinning on Pinterest, go to your blog and pin from there.
